Aren’t They Just Talking’?
Today in Plays and Playwrights we read a short one act with two young children sharing an afternoon of hooky from school. There is no one in the play other then these two children. On the surface not much happens: they meet each other, challenge and play with each other, and then the girl simply walks away down the railroad track – much as she began the story. Read more
Making Tonight Different
I took a leap and became a bit impulsive in teaching Company today. I have been working to combine both self-awareness in life with the physical self awareness that is the cornerstone of the work we are doing on Viewpoints. After a full class of playing with Tempo, Duration, Repetition, and Kinestetic Response, we sat on the floor in a breathless circle to disect the exercise and see what new awarenesses came to the surface. Toyland
I have a new test for actors – – perhaps it could even be used as some kind of an audition. My thought is to have all of the actors in question bring in a collection of toys that they currently have stocked on their bedroom shelves. They would be forbidden from bringing anything that requires electricity. Read more
Love, Hate and a Light Bulb
While reading one of the one acts from 27 Wagons Full of Cotton there is a character who willingly lets herself be hurt and abused – – and even goes so far as to welcoming the abuse. The students are mystified. They, of course, want to immediately go to a sadomasochistic explanation – likely due to the popularity of the Shades of Gray movie and book. Although this could be part of the answer – it really does reach beyond this. Read more
