The one thing that drives me totally nuts in class is to reason with a student as to why they either didn’t get around to reading the play, don’t like plays, or are simply resigned to never reading plays. They claim there are an “actor” or a “technician” yet they are only interested in what goes on in rehearsals and performances. How can that be??? – – – well, it simply CAN’T be. I don’t get it. We are all here in theatre for ONE PURPOSE: to serve the play. If “the play” is not your first love and your first concern in every one of your theatre classes then you need to be escorted to the door just as soon as possible. If you have a theatre teacher that doesn’t LOVE dramatic literature then you need to be a bit leary. People who want to call themselves theatre people – in any form at all – should be people who are eagerly and regularly reading plays not be cause they have to – but because there is nothing else more important or enjoyable for them to do. Nuff said!
