Is It Time for Loving?

unknownIn Directing class we were discussing the current status of our all-school musical. Each of the assistant directors has had a different vantage point but they all agree on the same issues. In a cast of 40+ actors they are finding it difficult to keep everyone on the same page; some of the actors are peaking and need more reassurance; some actors are just tired and have checked out the process; some of the actors are working and making steady progress each and every rehearsal; and some of the actors seem stuck and haven’t made the progress that was desired. Some of the actors are feeling hungry for more and more notes for validation and a sense that they are getting the job done. Some of the actors have just heard too much and are getting anxious and overloaded. What an amazing learning opportunity in both theatre and in just simple people management. These lessons will easily apply to ANY job these students pursue in the future.

In summary, the actors were trying to figure out which actors would be best be served with notes and which actors need much fewer notes and would be best just giving them some simple lovin’. Is it best to still be swinging the stick or has the time come yet for hugs and kisses?- – – no easy call.
